Nelson Mandela asks – Am I free yet?

by Edgar Edgarberger

How do you free Nelson Mandela?

Well if you’re the Specials AKA, you release a jaunty (for “jaunty” read wimpy) song in the early 80’s (a bit like UB40’s hopeful and misguided “Stand down Margaret” about Thatcher – by the end of the 80’s a much more realistic Morrisey sang “when will you die?”).

However, if you’re the Politburo of the Soviet Union, in 1970 you approve the fitting out of  a vessel and train the ANC’s Military wing in Baku Naval base to really free Nelson Mandela. Unfortunately, engine problems in Mombaasa put paid to that one. (Source: James Sanders Apartheid’s Friends p284).

Can you just imagine…?

I don’t think Matt Damon would ever have starred in a film about that one!
